About Spike

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Housetrained: Yes
Spike is a 3 year old blonde male Chihuahua. He is up to date on his vaccines and he has been neutered. Poor Spike came from an unfortunate situation of having a family who did not understand the value of heartworm treatment. As a result he contracted heartworms and his family surrendered him as a result of the heartworms. 8/2/07: We are currently treating Spike for his heartworms; he has had his first treatment and will have the second treatment in three weeks. Heartworm treatment is a very painful process for dogs to endure. Spike cried in pain all night following his first treatment. Even pain medication did not lessen his suffering. In spite of all he has been through, Spike is a very sweet little boy. He loves people and he loves attention. He is happiest when he can snuggle up next to me on the couch and go to sleep. He is currently in a home with other dogs and cats and seems to get along fine with both species. He does tend to be food aggressive with other animals but not with people (I can take his food away from him or push him away from his food without any problems). He has a bit of "little man's syndrome" and thinks he can push my big dogs around. We are currently accepting applications for Spike, but he will not be ready to go to his new home until his heartworm treatments are completed and he has a negative heartworm test. 8/9/07: Spike continues to improve after his first heartworm treatment. He is not in pain anymore but his back is still very tender at the injection site. He is adapting well to living with multiple dogs and cats. He absolutely loves people...especially boys. He is a pleasure to have in my house and I am finding myself falling in love with him. He will make a wonderful pet for the right family. 9/27/07: Spike is currently free of heartworms! It has been a huge struggle for him. Over the last month, Spike has become less and less tolerant of my other dogs and is quick to growl and snarl at them. Therefore, we would like to place him in a home that either has no other dogs or only one very easygoing dog. Spike's ideal home would be one with a retired woman/man who loves to sit on the couch and watch TV. Spike is happiest when he is snuggled up in a blanket lying right up against someone. He needs a quiet home life as he tends to get frazzled by chaos.
